Kiribati: Review

Kiribati: Review

Located on both sides of the equator, the Republic of Kiribati, the original name “Kiri-Bas”, including Gilbert, Phoenix (Phoenix) and Line Islands, was known according to British laws as Hilbert Islands. The measured Sushi area of Kiribati is a little more than 726 km2 on which a tiny nation lives, but its 33 atolls cover the huge 5 million km2 of the Pacific Ocean. Most atolls surround turquoise lagons, these small elevations over the surrounding ocean are not always visible among the waves.

The recent colonial past of Kiribati and the history of the Second World War had a great influence on the islands. For many centuries, the main foods here were coconuts, breadwood fruits and fish. And now, even on the main island of Tarawa (Tarawa), most local residents live in traditional raised straw huts. Nevertheless, Western influence is manifested in the form of cars, bars, films, the Internet and an inevitably increasing urban population. Naive children can twist the bold “Muri” (hello) to strangers, while adults will surprise you with the concise lifting of the eyebrows in a traditional greeting. Nothing is done here quickly, relax and love life, arriving on the islands.
